I press F8 to accept the agreement and then it brings me to the partition page. The strange thing is that in that box in the lower part of the screen, I only see:. Then I tried pressing "d" to delete the partition, but this message appears:. Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporaty Setup files that are required to complete the installation. To continue press Enter.
I pressed Enter to return to the previous screen, and I tried to select a different partition but nothing happened. When I press "c" to create a new partition or Enter to setup Windows XP on the selected partition, this long message appears:. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:. Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Started Optionsm and then select Safe Mode. Like with the 64 bit version, I tried installing from the pre-installed Windows Media Center Edition, but this message appeared:.
Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD". So at this point I really don't know what to do. I don't know much about computers but to me it doesn't make any sense. My hard disk seems to be working fine seeing how it loads the pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition without any problems.
I'm able to go to the internet, copy files back and forth, etc. So why doesn't it recognise the hard disk during installation?!?!?! Like I said, I bought the computer yesterday. It's brand new. I didn't change anything, I didn't do anything.
More seriously, you probably just need to check HP's site for text mode drivers for your SATA storage controler and find a way to load them when it says "Press F6 to load drivers from floppy" or something like that.

As far as windows setup is concerned, it does not exist. Meanwhile I can use fdisk and seagate tools on it to delete and create partitions on it. I tried changing which IDE slot it was connected to with my dvd burner but doing that made the system unable to recognize the dvd drive too. So I'm thinking either I have a faulty ide slot, or some sort of virus. But I keep in mind that the HD is connected to the same IDE slot that it always was, and it worked perfectly fine before, which is really the confusing part.
So I nuked the partitions again and remade them with diskwizard again. I currently have it checking the drive again so I'll find out soon if the situation has improved. If there IS a virus on the disk, I'm guessing I'm gonna have to zero out the thing like bldegle2 suggested, since seagates own tools offer the option of doing so quick or full, guess I'd go with full.
Right now I've given up any hope of retrieving info from the drive and I just want my gb disk to work normally. In case anyone else has had similar experiences and know what the deal is. That is going to have to be done. If the drive is a SATA model, you must install drivers for it during the installation. Unless you have slipstreamed them into an installation CD you need to have them on a floppy drive during installation.
You can also check the bios and disable that feature you mentioned I'd simply reset the bios to factory defaults. Triple6 Rob. Joined Jan 2, Messages 45, OK, you have three ide connectors on that board. The two standard controlled by the intel controller AND a single ide controlled by the promise controller.
I am betting you have these drives connected to the promise controller. You can do one of two things; 1 Connect the drives to the standard ide controller 2 Set the promise controller to ide mode. After that you will need to load the promise driver via the F6 prompt during setup.
Note there are different promise drivers depending on the mode selected ie raid or non-raid. FWIW I would just use the standard ide. Hi, the two harddrives are connected via 1 cable, which are connected to a slot in a different corner on the motherboard than the rest of the IDE slots. This is when i expect it to run the CD and its not. I tried putting the IDE back to how it was and this sitll happens.
Joined Apr 3, Messages You might have knocked it loose when moving the HDD's over. As posted above, go back and recheck ALL connection and jumper settings. Set jumpers accordingly. Once you are done, enter the bios and see if all of the drives are detected. BTW the promise settings are there, read your manual. It will show you where the settings are located. You can find your own manual at Asus. Hi again, thank you for all your fast input, this is great.
The CD-rom works now and I can run the windows. Now, when I try to install, I get the same error and along with the "Unknown Disk" as posted earlier. But, the error following that has changed slightly. It now says: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.
If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to be sure you have adequate disk space I do obviously. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters What does video adapter have to do with this? Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options and then select Safe Mode.
A few things to try.
