Born in of a desire to restore the Great Karoo to its former glory, Samara has pioneered the rewilding of a landscape that had been turned over to agriculture for the best part of three centuries. Once a thriving semi-arid ecosystem of astonishing diversity, the fortunes of the Great Karoo region changed with the advent of fences, firearms and farming.
The once-epic springbok migrations vanished, as did the predators that stalked the herds. The ecosystem faltered; grassland slowly turned to dust.
Today, thousands of wild animals roam this born-again wilderness and Samara is working with local stakeholders to extend the conservation ethic to over 3 million acres. Two intimate owner-run lodges with a true sense of place offer a quintessentially warm Karoo welcome, with myriad activities on offer to explore, entertain and educate. There are only 7, highly endangered cheetah known to remain worldwide, with a stronghold in Southern Africa. The population trend is decreasing, mostly due to habitat loss, conflict with farmers and ranchers, competition with other large predators such as lions and the smuggling of cheetah cubs into the illegal exotic pet trade.
The last wild cheetah in the Karoo was seen in the s. Accused of being a threat to livestock, they were hunted and persecuted across the Eastern Cape to such an extent that they became locally extinct. This lasted until , when Samara made history by reintroducing cheetah as apex predator in the Karoo landscape. The Samara cheetah population has flourished to such an extent that offspring born on the property have been made available to other conservation areas, from national parks to private reserves.
Crucially, Samara works closely with university departments and conservation bodies to ensure that these highly endangered big cats are given the best chance of survival. This ensures the long-term viability of the species and the genetic and demographic integrity of the South African population.
